INFORMATION ON THE USE OF HTTP COOKIES
Basic information
The new Electronic Communications Act (ZEK-1), implementing into the Slovenian legislation the revised Directive 2002/58/EC on privacy in electronic communications, entered into force on 15/06/2013 and applies to all websites that in any way use web cookies and similar technologies for their operations.
The Directive is also amended in provisions stipulating cookies and similar technologies which store information or obtain information stored on the user's terminal equipment (such as a computer or a mobile device). The use of such technologies is now possible only on the basis of the consent of the user.
The use of cookies on the Web has been in place for a long time. However, users of such technologies are generally not very well informed and not that familiar with the tools that enable the management of cookies.
What are HTTP cookies?
A cookie is a small text file which is transferred to the user’s computer after they visit a website. It may contain:
- the name of the server from which the cookie is sent,
- the lifetime of the cookie, or
- its value, usually a randomly generated, unique number.
The cookie itself does not contain or collect information. However, the identification of a cookie by the server, together with a web browser, enables assistance in the implementation of user-friendly services – for instance, to recall previous purchases or data about the user's account. In fact, only the server that has sent a cookie can read and use it. Cookies can thus enrich the user’s experience on a safe website. On the other hand, they are also used in ways that constitute an interference with an individual's privacy. Cookies can be stored either for the duration of a browsing session or longer.
WHICH COOKIES DO WE USE AND WHY?
When you use our website, the following categories of cookies may be set on your device:
- ‘Strictly necessary' cookies: These cookies are essential in helping you to move around our website. These cookies do not gather information about you that could be used for marketing or remembering where you've been on the internet. As an example, they can remember previous actions (such as text you've entered in a registration form) when navigating back to a page in the same session.
- Analytics cookies: In order to keep our website relevant, easy to use and up-to-date, we use web analytics services to help us understand how people use it. For example, we can see which parts of the website are most popular, identify where visitors are accessing the site from, identify when errors occur, and test different versions of a page or feature to see which one works best. The web analytics services may also use cookies and similar technologies to make the information collected more useful. When you are viewing a website, a cookie is transferred to your browser by the web server and is stored on your computer. It can only be read by the server that gave it to you.Cookies allow web analytics services to recognise your browser or device and, for example, identify whether you have visited our website before, what you have previously viewed or clicked on, and how you found us. The information is anonymous and only used for statistical purposes. It allows us to track information, such as how many individual users we have and how often they visit our websites. It also helps us to analyse patterns of user activity and to develop a better user experience. Web analytics data and cookies cannot be used to identify you as they never contain personal information such as your name or email address.
- Functional cookies: These cookies allow websites and applications to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you are in) and provide enhanced, more personal features. The information these cookies collect is usually anonymised which means we can't identify you personally. They do not gather any information about you that could be used for selling advertising or remembering where you've been on the internet, but do help with serving advertising.
- Targeting cookies: We use cookies for targeted advertising. These cookies can track your visits around the web but they don't know who you are. Without these cookies, online advertisements you encounter will be less relevant to you and your interests.
